Hello! I’m Emily. I’ve been in love with food and cooking my whole life. My grandmother was a wonderful home cook, my mother and uncle both inherited her talent and finesse in the kitchen, and I caught the bug from them at a young age. My most cherished childhood memories revolve around Grammy’s kitchen and holiday meals with the family. (The name of my blog, “What’s the Oven on For?” is an homage to Grammy and her endearing culinary forgetfulness.)
Throughout high school and college I started becoming more interested in nutrition, trying to educate myself about the latest diet trends, and trying to figure out why does this happen when you eat that? I succumbed to a few fad diets, and was mostly interested in weight-loss (I, like many other teenage/early 20’s girls, was often self-conscious about my body). In the past five years, I decided to tweak my lifestyle and am now focused on clean eating, wholesome foods, and overall wellness.
In the spring of 2014, a few months before I got married, I started learning about the Paleo diet. I was looking for a lifestyle transformation, and a new way to fuel my body. I followed the Paleo diet pretty closely for several years until I realized I wasn’t looking for a necessarily restrictive diet (since I had no allergies or intolerance), so I reincorporated some light dairy and whole grains. My style of cooking is now mostly Paleo, focusing on whole and nutrient-dense foods.
Having just moved from Chicago this year, I am a brand new Dallas resident! I live with my favorite person, my husband Fabio (yes that’s really his name! – he’s from Brazil), and our sweet pitbull, Nomi.
Here on What’s The Oven On For? you will find a lot of my Paleo faves, a good amount of gluten-free recipes, and dishes inspired by foods I’ve eaten while traveling. If you’re lucky, you’ll also catch some recipes inspired by Brazilian and Cuban cuisines (my faves), and by some of Grammy’s classic recipes.
