I’m so excited to do my second Whole30 in January! I was suuuper nervous for my first one (in October), but ended up loving it. (I wrote about my experience here.) While I was pretty prepared for my first time around, I definitely think there’s an advantage of having some tricks/favorite products and recipes up your sleeve. If anyone is doing a January Whole30 for the first time (or 5th time!) below are some of my Whole30 product faves:
- Nutpods (Dairy-free, unsweetened creamer)
I raved about Nutpods in my Whole30 Experience post, but this stuff really made my first Whole30 survive-able. There are French Vanilla and Hazelnut flavors (and Pumpkin Spice in the fall!). You can buy them on Amazon or Thrive Market, too.
I also really like Califia Farms unsweetened creamers.
2. Epicbar (Clean, meat snack-bars)
Although snacking while doing the Whole30 isn’t recommended…sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. And these responsibly sourced 100% meat bars do the trick and keep you full! They come in tons of flavors (my fave is Chicken Sriracha) and you can find them at most major grocery stores.
3. Coconut Aminos (Soy-free seasoning sauce)
Sometimes, in order to pack in all the protein and veggies for one meal, a stir-fry is where it’s at. Since soy sauce (and soy in general) isn’t permitted on Whole30, Coconut Aminos come to the rescue! I can usually find it at my Kroger but it’s cheaper on Thrive!
4. Wild Planet Tuna (Sustainably Caught)
Since most of us eat quite a bit of meat and fish while doing Whole30, I find it important to seek out the most responsibly caught/farmed animal products. I trust Wild Planet for my tuna! I find Wild Planet at most big grocery stores.
Another great brand is Safe Catch.
If you haven’t already tried this seasoning blend (have you been living under a rock?!), you must. A mix of dried onion, garlic, poppy and sesame seeds, and sea salt, it’s delicious….on anything. Eggs, roasted veggies, in homemade salad dressing, sprinkled on roasted chicken breast…Get it at Trader Joe’s or make your own!
6. Bragg’s Nutritional Yeast (Mysteriously delicious, cheesy seasoning)
To be perfectly honest, I don’t…really know…what nutritional yeast…is. It has the consistency of fish food and the flavor of mild cheese, but better! I love to roasted it on veggies, sprinkle on eggs, or add into pureed cauliflower to make it taste more cheesy! I find it at any major grocery store.
7. Bilinski’s Chicken Sausage (Organic, ethical, and casing-free)
A sausage that is made from free-range chickens, is casing-free, and tastes good deserves a freakin’ medal. Bilinksi’s is delicious, and is Whole30 approved since it contains no added sugar. (Most sausages do!) I get mine at Kroger, but I’ve seen different flavors at different big grocery stores (mine only carries a few).
The following recipes were live-savers for me! I never got sick of them over the course of the 30 days.
1.THE BEST Chicken Marinade
This marinade recipe is adapted from this one, aptly called “The Best Chicken Marinade Recipe” (also the first recipe that comes up on Google when you search that exact phrase).
Ingredients: 1/4 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar, 2 Tablespoons Dijon mustard, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon dried rosemary, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Instructions: Butterfly chicken breast and marinade overnight, then heat a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Sear on both sides, then bake at 350 for about 7 mins.
2. Homemade Ketchup
Ingredients: 2-3 Tablespoons tomato paste, 6-7 Tablespoons water (more or less depending how thick/thin you like your ketchup), 2-3 Tablespoons balsamic vinegar. 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon chili powder, plenty of salt and pepper. (Be sure to season HEAVILY, otherwise it’ll just taste like glob of tomato paste!)
3. Almond Crusted Chicken Nuggets
I LOVE this recipe, from Gimme Some Oven. I simply omit the flour to make them Whole30/Paleo compliant. (They still come out perfectly!)
4. Cauliflower Rice
I make this almost every other day. It is the perfect base for a big, warm Buddha bowl. My all-time favorite seasoning for Cauliflower Rice is the Shiraz Spice Blend from Hummus Chick. Find the recipe on my blog.
5. Protein-Packed Tuna Salad
The fact that I don’t like fish, but I love this tuna salad recipe should be a pretty good testimonial. But eat it without the bread, of course! Find the recipe here.
